How many interviews have you seen where artists, musicians, writers, dancers (etc), awkwardly deny they are "influenced" by some other musician (or film maker, or dancer, or whatever it is). Or say they'd rather not be "pigeon holed" as X. Or where someone sees a movie and says, derisively, "It's very this or very that", "heavily indebted to ...". Why the derisiveness?

It's endemic in the Arts.

It's even more insidious though. This line of thinking actually stifles creativity.
