Imagine you are in a room. You have gone mad. You have decided that every time you hear the word "aha" you will, for some reason you can't really explain , say "aha" again.

There is a microphone in the room and a speaker.

As promised you say "aha."

The microphones picks up your voice and the speaker repeats the "aha" a few seconds later.

You say "aha" again.

And so madness descends! It goes on until either microphone or speaker stop working or you give up.

Dark, murky and evil.

The forest was a brooding mass of wood-based malfeasance. Shadows clearly had diabolical things lurking in them. The gnarled boughs formed twisted faces in mid-twist. The air was lifeless and cold. The very soul of the place seethed with unbridled evil. In short, not the best argument for eco-tourism.

You have the messy world of, well, messes. The "messy open system". And you have the system designed and understood by a group of experts; experts working from the Platonic Ideal of the perfect system. "The Control-freak artist model".

In the Control-freak artist model, a few artisans create a coherent, aesthetically satisfying system. It looks great because they take the best ideas and technology available at the time and apply it with great care and precision.

The open system looks messy by comparison. It is vulgar. Lacking direction. A directionless melange.
