The Joy of Deleting & the Flesch Thinking Ease Equation

Friday, April 16th 2010

I sometimes have a strange reluctance to delete text. I don't want to throw away effort! But when I follow my instincts it usually improves how the text reads. The joy of deleting is something to cultivate!

The "yes, I don't want to look stupid reflex"

Thursday, April 15th 2010

Without stupid questions the world gets very stupid indeed. Here's why.

The Quaxod Group

The room was nondescript. White and officious and vaguely clinical.

Ideal Supervillain

Wednesday, April 14th 2010

My ideal supervillain.

Pencil thin moustache. Monocle (occasional use of an eyepatch). One milky, half-dead eye.

Chrome helmet. He must have a chrome helmet. Under the chrome helmet -- no hair, save a few, really long wispy strands.

He sits on a greenish-blue, flying saucer-like disk. The disk hovers above the ground at eye level.

Small cape. Incredibly bushy eyebrows. One gnarled hand poised over a trigger. The trigger for some horrendous weapon involving clouds of noxious gas. The other hand is in a leather glove; a hand for pointing and waving at heroes dismissively.

He has an army of robotic tripod henchmen. Each henchbot is equipped with an unwavering, cycloptic red eyeball and a crackling, electrified trident replete with pulsing plasma.

His name? Skulkor Punaninimis, Leader of the Techonoids.

(He will be featuring in a forthcoming book not available in all good book stores)

Means and Ends: Ideology A

Tuesday, April 13th 2010

"It may, perhaps, seem unfair to use the term socialism to describe its methods rather than its aims, to use for a particular method a term which for many people stands for an ultimate ideal." (F.A. Hayek, The Road the Serfdom, p.35)

This struck me as rather interesting. Arguments - particularly political ones - often hinge on associating terms with their ideal ends or the means to get there. I'm not saying Hayek did this, he expressly didn't, but many people do.

A Cunning Use for Chairs

Tuesday, April 13th 2010

Apparently some bikies had a fight yesterday. They fought each other with poles, chains (with pad locks attached to them) and ... chairs.

This made me think.
