Drippings of Pollock, Rationality and the New Age

Matthew May, in The Pursuit of Elegance tells a splendid tale. It's about the physicist and artist, Richard Taylor. On an art expedition to the country, Taylor and his colleagues decided to erect a "wind driven pendulum" to create a painting. The motion of the pendulum would be used to drip paint on a canvas.

The Countdown

When he first moved in, he seemed nice enough. He didn't say much. Kept to himself.

Then he put a lock on his door.

He started coming and going at night. Rustling in bins. And asking strange questions:

'Why don't you photosynthesise? It seems much more efficient?'

... very, very seriously.

One night, there were odd noises coming from his bedroom. The sound of machinery. Clunks. Whirrs.

His housemates decided they wanted to break in and see what's he was doing.

They waited for him to leave. Broke in via the bedroom window.

The bedroom looked was full of stuff. He had laid odd carpeting and hung up weird bluish lights. The rooms was filled with papers, books, weird electronics; piles of newspapers from the 1970s. A typewriter. A computer screen or two.

The screen had each of their details on it. Each person has a little display:

Geoff Watley will die 5 days, 2 Hours, 12 seconds.

Arin Patino will die in 9 days, 3 hours, 4 seconds.

Jenni No will die in 9 days, 6 hours, 3 seconds.
