Three Entirely Useless Paragraphs for Your Delectation

Monday, January 10th 2011

In our failure there is success. And when we fail to succeed surely success awaits us when the success is the failure to successfully precede the success with an inevitable failure.

The truth is often only true insofar that it is indicative of the truth but not actually representative of that which is true; a truth of this sort is false and true at the same time, in that it is a truth often proposed by those asserting a truth that is untrue in order to elucidate upon a greater truth that may be true or false but can only be expressed in a falsity that is, in the end, true.

When one examines the true meaning of a meaning one cannot help but ponder what it means to ascribe a meaning to something that may or may not mean what it purports to mean, but merely be a meaning in search of an actual meaning where the meaning of the meaning is in fact not what the meaning means but something else entirely.

The Political Grid-Mind

Consider this proposition:

I'd always support my country, whether it was right or wrong.

or

No one chooses his or her country of birth, so it's foolish to be proud of it.

or

Abortion is wrong.

The interesting thing about this is it illustrates the fundamental categorical mistake inherent in political discourse.

It's illustrated nicely by this test at politicalcompass.org

You are given a series of propositions and then asked to check a button:

*Strongly Disagree

*Disagree

*Agree

*Strongly Agree

At the end of the survey you get classified:

Compensatory Personality Social Superstructure

Friday, January 7th 2011

Comparing intelligence to physical beauty is silly. What is the point of comparing the incomparable? But some people insist on saying ...

"beauty is shallow, it should be all about the entire personality. That is real, deep beauty".

They may not even say it. They will imply it. Sometimes they will unconsciously adopt the idea without realising it.

The idea takes many forms. Self-righteous indignation about bimbos trading on their looks as a substitute for talent, suspicion of people who are good looking and who display skill, better looking people getting more opportunities, the opposite sex being shallow in their assessment of prospective mates by focusing on physical beauty, etc, etc.

But "personality" is the product of the body, too. The brain is an organ that is quite flexible and adaptable. Research in brain plasticity reveals that. But the brain is still limited by its physical form. The health of the liver, kidneys and so are directly related to mood, humour. Facial symmetry, height, complexion, size of the eyes, bone structure of the face, etc, are all physical characteristics too. In this way, the "personality" is a physical characteristic just like beauty.

There really is no separating them out.

So why break up things into simple categories such as "beauty" and "personality"?
