Saving Capitalism from Drowning

Wednesday, June 8th 2011

Imagine you are going to buy a mobile phone. It comes down to two different phones. You like them both. They both work well.

The Beige Pragmatist and the Hypercritic

Tuesday, June 7th 2011

Do you talk about ideals, principles, theories, and general plans?

Or do you talk about compromises, people, and the next step in concrete plans?

5 Steps for Staying Ignorant

Saturday, June 4th 2011

You can tell if something is simple using a quick test.

If you take any more away from the form, will the form no longer exist? If the answer is "yes", then you have a simple form.

In music is could be the third guitar in the mix and bloated fourth pre-chorus. In design it could be the extra pictures in the layout, the extra font in the book cover. In engineering it could that you're covering too many use-cases, trying to be too generic, or trying to be too clever. In writing it could be the extra words in a sentence, the extra example at the end of a series of examples :-).

But there's nothing as complicated as simplicity. Because the process of removing adornments, elaborations, and so on, is something that demands a strange sort of skill.
