The extremes of emotion and behaviour are creative. They produce some amazing things. Wonderful spectacles. Great works. Great performances. And, sometimes, in their extremity, they shed light on abstruse things that would otherwise remain unexpressed.

If the world was left to tamer souls, some things in life would be left unsaid, unpainted, unwritten, undone, uncreated. They'd be left mired in a morass of reasonableness and respectability; lost in the cluttered, scheduled boredom of bourgeois domestication.

In most Art there's a desire to resolve something insoluble. To think about things that don't form themselves into neat ideation. Sometimes it's vast and incomprehensible. Sometimes it's a horrible, diabolical abomination. Sometimes its an ineffable, powerful mystery. Sometimes its the comprehension of a new pattern; a majestic triumph over randomness. Sometimes it's a joyful revelation. But, nearly always, there is an inescapable, haunting mystery in it; the pursuit of which is a life's work.

But the struggle implicit in a lot of art is both why people need to create it and why they avoid it. "Art" itself is considered somehow namby-pamby, self-indulgent, superfluous, trivial, quixotic, egotistical. But under that contempt lies fear. Fear of what Great Art reveals ...
