Hunter Gatherer UIs

People are used to celebrities, people everybody knows about but has never actually met.

People are used to giant machine-like companies that don't have the flexibility to be personalised, to have the "human touch".

People are used to giant, anonymous government bureaucracies.

But, deep down, people crave a world that is small, flexible, and looks a lot like a small group of hunter gatherers.

All great technology tries to operate at scale but interact with humanity at a hunter gatherer level :-).

Government by the people for the people?

In theory, yes.

In practice it is about dividing the ruling class. Making them fight amongst themselves. And thus averting the worst aspects of tyranny.

Saturday came and went. I did nothing at all, apart from ingest cream buns and pat the cat. I made sure I used different hands for each task. Cats carry all kinds of cunning contagions. Sunday arrived, I awoke and prepared to indulge in another blissful day of nothing when at 11 O'clock the door was rudely rapped upon. Naturally I was disturbed. What foul creature would dare soil my domicile's portal with a rap?

Sandy has returned from his death-bed in good spirits and glowing health. He always does. He's keen to take over Philosophy I as soon as possible. I don't know if I should inflict him on the newcomers to our university, but if I do they'll appreciate my genius even more when I return next term. Religious Experience, after all, is Sandy's field. Certainly, judging by his stays in hospital and the stories he tells he should have piled up enough near-death experiences to be on really good terms with the whole thing.

The weekend of blissful nothingness passed quickly. Apart from a phone call from Jeremy's mother telling me she was worried about him. That call took an inexorably long time. Apparently he is attending some form of club that specialises in deafening music and hallucinogens. I muttered words to the effect that "it was his life and he was quite capable of ruining it of course, but I suspected he would grow out of it." He may not, but a boy must have his freedom.

Gave another lecture today. About Knowledge and Knowing. That's what I titled it anyway. It was really about sex. That was the metaphor I used, anyway; how thinking about sex causes a reaction in the genitals. Another laugh. It was all about the mind/body cliche - I thought I'd get that out of the way early in the term. "Next week," I said as I concluded. "I'll be going into Religious Experience. That's with a big R and a big E. I hope you're all ready for your first tutorials, too, make sure you've thought a bit about the topics before you come in. Otherwise they will not be the religious experiences I had planned for you." Most of them won't do any reading of course, and those that do will have thought about them too much.
